Volcano always sounds scary. I had accessed two volcano areas, Yellowstone National Park & Kilauea of Hawaii, plus another one virtual experience, Pompeii, Italy.
We visited Kilauea located in the Big Island of Hawaii in 2016. The visitor centre has a wealth of information on the Volcano area, including trails that are open and closed. When we walked on the trails, I felt the heat of volcano.
Kilauea is the most active of the several volcanoes located in Hawaii. The 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano was one of the largest volcanic events in Hawaii in 200 years. From May through August of 2018, lava flows started from dozens of fissures and destroyed at least 700 homes and forced thousands to evacuate. At the same time, the summit area was dramatically changed by tens of thousands of earthquakes, towering ash plumes, and a massive collapse of Kīlauea caldera.
Yellowstone National Park is sitting on top of a volcano. Compared to active Kilauea volcano, Yellowstone volcano, on the other hand, has not erupted for some 600,000 years. The sizes are also much different. Kilauea has a caldera approximately 3 by 2 miles (5 by 3.2 km) across while the Yellowstone caldera is measures approximately 30 by 45 miles (50 by 70 km) across.
If the supervolcano underneath Yellowstone National Park ever had another massive eruption, it could spread ash for thousands of miles around the western half of the United States. It’d be a huge global disaster. Fortunately, the chances of this sort of eruption are exceedingly small in the next few thousands years.
The third volcano I know was from an interesting Airbnb online experience. Roberto, an Italian archaeologist, presented the history about Pompeii, including the plastic casts of deadly eruption of Vesuvius. According to experts, Italy’s Mount Vesuvius is the most dangerous volcano in the world. In 79 A.D., an eruption from Vesuvius buried the city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. More than 16,000 people died during the disaster.

We’re also fascinated by volcanoes, but Kilauea was quiet when we visited Hawaii so we didn’t see any glowing lava! I love the way volcanoes remind us that the Earth is in charge, and can never be tamed however ever hard mankind tries. Have a wonderful festive holiday, June.
